St. Cloud State University is sponsoring a series of programs in conjunction with “Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story,” a major television documentary about the Federal Writers’ Project to be broadcast on the Smithsonian Channel HD. The Federal Writers’ Project was a section of President Franklin Roosevelt’s mammoth Works Progress Administration (WPA), designed to get America back to work after the Depression. It was responsible for the American Guide Series of travel guides for every state and for interviews with former slaves and thousands of citizens all across the U.S. in the 1930s. Many writers from the project later became famous, among them Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, Studs Terkel and Eudora Welty.

The first program in the St. Cloud series is a panel discussion about the Works Progress Administration, Federal Writers’ Project and Central MN to take place 10 a.m. – noon, Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the Stearns History Museum in St. Cloud. College Students Returning

My first recollection of a “college student” a long time ago, was the chatter  around town about the new students arriving to SCSU.  However what I remember the most was all the freshmen had to wear these little beanies when they first arrived.  I actually once believed that these little hats were cool.

Move in weekend is once again upon us and thousands of students (and their parents) will be descending upon our community.  Lets not forget to extend a warm welcome and appreciate their arrival.  We are fortunate to have so many excellent colleges and universities.   They add so much to our quality of life  and needless to say are a tremendous benefit to our local economy.

To all the staff, faculity and students:  Welcome Back and have a successful 2009/2010 academic year.
